Project on Sustainable Organic Farming in India by Shrey Deb

Introduction:

           Abundant use of chemical inputs for agriculture in India is threatening the ecosystem and the health of those consuming such farm products in India. With increasing awareness regarding the dangers of the use of inorganic food products around the world, India is lagging far behind. This project shall attempt to create a sustainable business model for organic food in India and in the process promote the practice of organic farming.

Objective:

           To create a sustainable organic food business model in India, in order to promote the practice of organic farming in the country.

Methodology:

-The project study will be conducted as follows:
-Identifying existing organic food business models around the world.
-Identifying their Critical Success Factors.
-Evaluating the applicability of those CSFs in India and the replicability of the business models in India
-Creating a business model for organic food in India, focusing on
      a. Supply chain innovation   b. Creation of demand for organic food in India

  1. Great that you are addressing demand side factors, and adopting global best practices. Would suggest that you analyze Indian cultural practices and price sensitivity, to decide the best way to package. Also, consider who is the best customer for a particular crop. For instance, Brittania/Nestle are focussing on ragi/millet biscuits/noodles, so an organic farmer could consider selling to them rather than in retail level.

In addition to studying existing international organic food business models and their replicability here, you can also look at similar existing Indian business models of some proxy products like solar energy, recyclable paper etc. This may help you in analyzing some of the successful entry strategies of eco-friendly products for Indian markets
